Deborah Rudacille is an independent journalist and science writer. Her first book, The Scalpel and the Butterfly (Farrar, Straus & Giroux, 2000), was named one of the year’s best nonfiction books by the Los Angeles Times. The Riddle of Gender (Pantheon, 2004) was a finalist for a Lambda Literary Award. Her new book, Roots of Steel: Boom and Bust in an American Mill Town, was published by Pantheon in January 2010. John Barry is an independent arts journalist and an instructor in the Language and Literature department at Maryland Institute College of Art (MICA). His work has appeared in American Theater, Salon, The Washington Post, N +1, Media Bistro, Smart Set, as well as in local publications including Baltimore City Paper, Urbanite, Baltimore Style, Chesapeake, Baltimore Brew, Maryland Daily Record, and RadarRedux. CityLit Project was founded in 2004 to nurture the culture of literature in Baltimore. It presents literary festivals, author events, writers workshops, writing contests, and a variety of youth programs. It publishes books under the CityLit Press imprint, and sponsors events such as The New Mercury Readings. CityLit events bring nationally known literary artists to Baltimore while showcasing regional poets and writers. In 2009, CityLit Festival was named a “Best of Baltimore” by Baltimore magazine. In 2010, CityLit Press’s first book received “Best of Baltimore” honors. Gregg Wilhelm is the nonprofit’s founder and executive director.
